Deploying the new ROPE ACCESS method

    Date Submitted 09/01/2025

KTHH Department – PHATECO Company is currently researching and applying a new rope access method to measure the structural thickness in the cargo holds of the FPSO PTSC LAM SON oil tanker of PTSC PS Company offshore Vung Tau.

This is a newly built tanker according to the new regulations on oil spill prevention of the IMO. The ship has a double-hull structure and a corrugated cargo hold wall. With this structural feature, the entire longitudinal and transverse walls inside the cargo hold have no access points to establish an anchor point system. Therefore, applying the conventional rope access technique is extremely difficult. To solve this problem, the Company hired a Malaysian Level 3 Rope Access expert to come to Vietnam to conduct a field survey and provide advice. After the field survey on the PTSC LAM SON vessel, the Rope Access department of the Technical Department held a meeting with the participation of the Level 3 expert and the Level 1, 2 and 3 Rope Access personnel of PHATECO to propose the optimal method for accessing and performing the work of measuring the thickness of structures in the cargo hold of the PTSC LAM SON vessel.

Finally, PHATECO agreed on the plan of using permanent magnet suspension points (MagFor) applied to the structural characteristics on the PTSC LAM SON vessel. After the Company’s Board of Directors approved the investment in MagFor equipment, rope access staff at the Vung Tau Office (PHATECO) actively participated in researching and practicing with new equipment and methods to catch up with the progress of providing services to customers this August.
